England and Germany in the Euro 2009 final

But you might not recognise the players

In recent years, the England football team has not faired well in international tournaments and failed to even qualify for Euro 2008, but now it seems the men’s team could learn a thing or two from the England women’s team.

This week, the England women’s team reached the final of Euro 2009, where they played against Germany. The Germans’ skill proved too much for the English, who lost the match 6-2.

Regardless of the final score, England was pleased to have made the final. The England women’s manager, Hope Powell, said, “We’re happy with what we’ve achieved, but not satisfied with what we’ve achieved.”

Women’s football is not a popular sport in England and is usually never seen on TV or reported in the newspapers. However, compared to the England men’s team, the women have proved themselves to be a good team. In contrast, the England men’s team hasn’t managed to reach a final for 43 years.

English female footballers hope the England women’s appearance in an international final will motivate people to be more interested in the sport. Linzi Hewitt, a female football coach, says, “The female game is still in its youth, but it is success like this that will boost support.”

The German players are the true champions of women’s football and seem virtually unbeatable, having won the past five European Cups.
